THE HOUSE SYSTEM OF S. M.’s ENGLISH MEDIUM SCHOOL

The house system is a traditional feature of the school. The school is divided into sub units called "Houses" and each student is allocated to one House at the moment of enrolment.

In modern times, in both day and boarding schools, the word House may refer only to a grouping of pupils, rather than to a particular building. The house system was devised to promote team spirit and a sense of belonging to the school. Also, this enables the senior students of the school to provide care and direction to their junior schoolmates. The House System provides excellent opportunities for student leadership and peer group support.

Structure of the House and the Responsibilities:

S.M.'s English Medium School also has the House System. The school is divided into four houses. They are Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj house, Swami Vivekananda House, Lokmanya Tilak House and Swatantryaveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar House. The students of the school are divided in these four Houses. Even the teachers also are divided in these four Houses. The teachers are the House Masters / Mistress of the House who work as the guide, facilitator and monitor for the students who allocate them or assign them the duties. Each house has the duty to perform. Each House has the responsibility to discharge their duties. House Masters and Mistress of each House assign the duties to the students of the House. Each House takes a week to discharge their duties as the Discipline Coordinator during Assembly time, Arrival time, Departure time Recess time and the small functions which are conducted in the school.

There is the selection of Head Boy and Head Girl from standard ten, even Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl also are selected for from standard ten. Two students are selected as the Discipline Coordinator. There are in all 8 House Captains consisting four Boys and four Girls. Four boys and 4 Girls are selected as the House wise Captain and Vice-captain. One Boy and one Girl are selected as the Sports Captain by the class teachers. Besides from each class 4 class prefects are selected by the class teachers. Of course, the selection criteria is fixed by the school authorities.

Various Competitions

Another feature of the House Systems is the arrangement of various competitions among the Houses. Sports, Arts, Music, Work Experience and many more fields are open to the students to conduct Inter House Competitions. At the end of the year, the House which will perform the best during the academic year is felicitated by conferring upon the Best House Award in the Assembly.
